Dunnottar Castle and Dunnicaer Promontory Fort, Stonehaven
In terms of surviving physical remains, there is little of an early date to be seen readily at either of these sites.
Nevertheless, the site of the later stone-built castle of Dunnottar was almost certainly a Pictish stronghold.
Additional evidence for a Pictish presence on this part of the coastline may be viewed on the coastal walk N from Dunnottar Castle to Stonehaven harbour. On rounding Bowdun Head, an isolated rock stack known as Dunnicaer may be seen on the south side of Strathlethan Bay. A number of Pictish stones were recovered from the top of this, early last century, since when the site has been further reduced by erosion. One of these stones can be seen at Marischal College, Aberdeen University.
